Want to carbo load in Asia? The Real Nyaung Shwe Bakery

Review_The Real Nyaung Shwe Bakery

Tucked away in the middle of Nyaung Shwe is a hidden gem. Not something you expect to find in Myanmar, Nyaung Shwe Bakery is full of delightful surprises. Run by a lovely couple, this bakery follows the modern hipster café style of the Western world. With everything baked fresh by the family, every meal melts in your mouth.

Having a Western day, I opted for the chicken burger off the board, after perusing their handmade menus. A fresh bread roll from the oven and a perfectly grilled piece of chicken with some salad. Just what the doctor ordered after living off a diet primarily made up of fried rice and fried noodles.

The prices make the bakery even better. With everything on the menu at the low end of the Myanmar price scale, Nyaung Shwe is perfect for those trying to save some cash after having to break the budget on accommodation day in, day out. You can even contemplate purchasing a donut or freshly baked cookies for dessert.

If a baked treat is not the answer, take a wander over to the freezer. Here you will find an assortment of homemade ice creams. The chocolate, chocolate-chip ice cream is absolutely delightful on a hot Myanmar day as you head back to the river after a bite to eat.

For those of you who enjoy a good coffee, I was told that it is the best coffee in Nyaung Shwe (my father tested almost every cafe/restaurant). To make it sweeter each coffee comes with an exquisite freshly baked cookie.

The chocolate iced donut was interesting. The donut was slightly dry compared to other donuts, lacking the fat you expect when you take that first bite. Not the usual texture or dough of a donut, but still delicious and most likely the healthiest chocolate donut I’ve ever eaten. So go enjoy a donut and watch your waistline at the same time!
