Where is the surf this Autumn?

Bring back the sun.
Bring back the surf.

Something is wrong with the ocean. March usually marks the start of my peak surf season here on the South Coast of New South Wales. Usually at this time of year, my local beach is graced with the presence of consistent decent waves. But this year… the waves aren’t behaving as they should.

What’s been happening to the surf this season?

If we’re not being bombarded with huge swells resembling a washing machine cycle on some serious steroids, we’re being offered fat sluggish waves with barely a a wall in sight.

Why is this happening?

I blame climate change and Donald Trump.

After all, Trump is currently the root of all evils in global media, so why not blame him for this too? Climate change may be a little more on the money, but then again, we may just be having a normal unpredictable Australian Autumn. All I know is, is that I don’t like it.

Could there be a silver lining to no surf?

Realistically… having no waves is a blessing in disguise for me. With my shoulder still giving me trouble, the lack of decent waves is letting it finally get the rest it needs to recover. Similarly, with no waves tormenting me from my window I don’t have to agonise over the decision to go out or rest my foot and should. Since I have little self control when it comes to going for a surf, the ocean is making the decision easier.

However, injuries aside, I’m dying for a surf! It’s been weeks since I paddled out and I need to get back in the water stat.

Are you having good waves where you are right now?

I’d love to hear about them and may even jump on a plane to join you!
