A Piece of Europe in Argentina

Bariloche, Argentina

Bariloche, formally known as San Carlos de Bariloche, is located in the Patagonian region of Argentina and is truly unique when compared with any other part of the country. Nestled in Nahuel Huapi National Park, Bariloche has the feel of a European town with the hardwood buildings and the stonework of Patagonia but also with the urban plan and alpine architecture one finds in Europe. Not only is everything very affordable for those on a budget, wherever you venture the stunning views of the National Park follow you.

Bariloche experienced rapid growth after the Second World War with many Europeans immigrating to Argentina’s south, and bringing with them distinct European touches. The locals can regale you with numerous tales about Bariloche’s beginnings and are happy to share the town’s stories. The European influence has resulted in the feeling of visiting the Alps – but without the price tag. And there is no wonder why Bariloche has become a popular destination for tourists.

Winter is a prime time to experience Bariloche at its best. Cerro Catedral Ski Resort with a peak of 2, 405 m is just a short shuttle bus trip away. Cerro Catedral has prices that can’t be beaten by any other ski resort and its slopes are competitive with the best. Ski gear hire is also just as affordable as the shockingly cheap lift prices. For the keen hikers there are some prime glaciers to explore on your own or in a group tour.

In the summer Nahuel Huapi Lake becomes alive with activity. A range of water sports are available from kayaking and parasailing to fly fishing. Nature buffs from all over come and hike the various hills and mountain peaks of Nahuel Huapi National Park. Bike and horse riding is another popular and affordable activity, enhanced by the breathtaking views along the trails.

A must-do in Bariloche is to roam the strip of shops that carry the alpine feeling both summer and winter. The storefronts hold an array of chocolate-filled windows. (There are also stores for those who have a more eclectic taste, or enjoy  something a little off the norm; you’ll know what I’m talking about when you see it.) The Chocolate del Turista or Mamuschka can’t be missed and will not fail in treating your sweet tooth – they have to be two of the best chocolatiers in town.
