What’s going on with my injuries?

FrothinFor those of you out of the loop, last year I was diagnosed with medial sesamoiditis. You can get all the deets of my sad saga here: How Sesamoiditis Isn’t Going to Keep Me From Surfing & Travelling.

So last time I wrote, the possibility that I would return to a normal active life were pretty slim. Even my prospects of
backpacking again were dismal.

Why am I writing about sesamoiditis again?

Well there have been a few major developments and guess what? They’re more than awesome!

I have since graduated from both my sports physician and specialist physiotherapist, this is after months of treatment and thousands of dollars. Because… I’m healing better than expected!

Not only am I allowed back in the water (in moderation and smaller swells as long as I experience no pain), but I’m also allowed to go for walks and light hikes! Still restricted to shoes at all times, there is hope as if there’s minimal walking involved such as a trip to the beach I can now wear Birkenstocks instead of my hiking boots!

As you can imagine I am super stoked with this outcome! Especially since they both agreed that in 12 months time I may even be completely healed. And… if I take care of myself I should be able to return to my barefoot lifestyle.

So what have I learnt from this experience?

I have finally realised that pushing my body wh
en its damaged is not a good idea. Yes, this is common sense for most people, but for me it is still a massive challenge. To not surf when it’s pumping, to put my feet up and rest when it’s perfect weather for a hike and to stop when I’m hurting goes against my nature and every essence of being.

Now that I have the go ahead, I am super stoked to start training for a life of adventure. After being injured for so long, my fitness is severely lacking so I’m striving to improve it as quickly as possible.

Not only do I plan to return full force to surfing, but I’m also super keen to get back on the wall and start climbing again as well as hiking as much as possible.

In other news, I have a strained potentially torn right pectoral muscle (refused to go for yet another MRI) but… my torn tendon in my right index finger is almost back to full strength. Is it just me or is there a pattern to my injuries… or is the right half of my body just super unlucky?

There is a long road ahead of me, so follow my blog to stay up with my progress because there are going to be some awesome adventures and challenges ahead now that I can finally move!

  1. Oh you poor determined girl I just caught up with all this suffering not surfing! I hope you slow down just enough not to get injured again but to still enjoy your life, remember you’re only a human! You can still pursue a lot of your hectic life just at a regular pace lol so glad you are healing well, this is because you are young and you listened to good advice well done as those two usually don’t go together, as Buddhism believes life is suffering so thats how we learn if we pay attention, take care now xxxx karen

    1. Thank you so much for your support Karen! I listened to a lot of bad advice first but luckily ended up with a winning medical/rehab team!
